Many were victims of the transatlantic slave trade, which saw millions of people forcibly taken from their homes and transported to the Cape to work in bondage.

One of the most poignant examples of this labor is the story of the . The washerwomen—many of whom are now buried at Prestwich Street—carried heavy washing all the way from the Castle of Good Hope up to Platteklip Ridge, where they did the city's laundry using the fresh water of the mountain stream. This was no small feat. The path, historically known as "Slave's Walk" (Buitenkant Street), required these women to haul linens, clothing, and heavy buckets up a steep incline, often in punishing heat, while under the watchful eyes of their masters.
