Emulators replicate the hardware environment of the Switch console, but they do not inherently contain Nintendo's copyrighted operating system code. To bridge this gap, emulators use two primary files:
If you are using version 14.1.2 firmware, your prod.keys must also be version 14.1.2 or higher. To run newer games, update your Switch console's firmware and dump fresh keys. Game version requires newer decryption keys.
Prod keys are proprietary software components owned by Nintendo. They are protected under intellectual property laws and Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) regulations. switch prod keys 14.1.2

When you use an emulator like Ryujinx, Yuzu, or Suyu, it has the software to simulate the Switch hardware but lacks the cryptographic keys to unscramble the game data. prod.keys fills this gap, telling the emulator exactly how to decrypt the data it's trying to run. While prod.keys contains the common, device-agnostic keys, a separate title.keys file can exist for game-specific keys, though prod.keys alone is often sufficient.
