is the fifth studio album by the English shoegaze band Slowdive , released on September 1, 2023, through Dead Oceans . It serves as the follow-up to their 2017 self-titled comeback album and was dedicated to the memory of Rachel Goswell’s mother and Simon Scott’s father, both of whom passed away in 2020. Album Overview

What makes everything is alive a triumph is its intentional restraint. In the 1990s, shoegaze was defined by a maximalist approach—dozens of guitar tracks layered on top of each other to create an impenetrable fortress of noise. On this record, Slowdive embraces space.

This track conjures a woozy, hypnotic atmosphere, nodding toward the gothic tendencies of bands like Interpol or The Cure. The reverb-heavy sound is pure bliss, as Halstead and Goswell's vocals breathe life into the lyrics.

The album's title, Everything is Alive , serves as a hopeful counterweight to the profound personal tragedies that occurred during its making. Both Rachel Goswell’s mother and Simon Scott’s father passed away in 2020.

The album opens with pulsating synth tones, a clear declaration of the album's expanded sonic palette. It gradually builds into a midtempo ballad with echoing guitars and wistful harmonies, serving as the perfect introduction to the record's new sound.

A career highlight and one of the most stunning tracks Slowdive has ever recorded, "Andalucia Plays" is the album's emotional core. It strips the shoegaze template down to its essence, applying it to an introspective, John Cale-inspired folk ballad. Halstead’s whisper-quiet vocal delivery is devastating: "Remember that first winter? You cried for all of us… You are my angel," he sings, with a clarity and intimacy that feels like a hand on your shoulder. When Goswell joins in for the harmonies, it's a moment of breathtaking, heart-melting beauty.

The album opens with a track that perfectly bridges Halstead’s electronic impulses with the band’s historic shoegaze grandeur. A swirling, arpeggiated synthesizer loop counts down the seconds before a heavy, distorted guitar riff crashes through the mix. It is immersive and dark, yet anchored by Halstead and Goswell’s intertwined vocals, reassuring the listener that despite the electronic pulse, this is undeniably Slowdive.

The creation of "everything is alive" was profoundly shaped by loss and the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The album is dedicated to two important figures—the mother of singer/guitarist Rachel Goswell and the father of drummer Simon Scott—who both passed away in 2020. Tragically, in the wake of her grief, Goswell also struggled with and overcame alcoholism before the album was completed.

Everything Is Alive , released in September 2023, represents a thematic and textural pivot. Written during periods of personal loss—most notably the passing of drummer Simon Scott’s mother and the grandmother of guitarist/vocalist Neil Halstead—the album operates as a work of mourning that refuses to succumb to despair. This paper investigates how the album’s production choices—specifically the use of vintage synthesizers and spatial mixing—create a sense of "hauntological" presence, suggesting that memory itself is a living entity.

🎧 Essential for fans of: Beach House, Cocteau Twins, DIIV, ambient dream pop.
