Sanda Marin was, in reality, Cecilia Maria Simionescu, born in December 1900 into a prominent intellectual family in Iași. Her father was Ion Th. Simionescu, a renowned naturalist, geographer, and president of the Romanian Academy. Growing up in such an environment, Cecilia had an elite education: she studied piano at a prestigious boarding school in Dresden and later in Paris, and mastered three foreign languages: German, French, and English.
