Released in 1983, is widely remembered as the "rogue" James Bond film that brought Sean Connery back to his most iconic role one final time. Despite featuring the 007 character, the film exists outside the "official" canon established by Eon Productions due to a decades-long legal dispute. 🎬 The "Battle of the Bonds"
For decades, Never Say Never Again sat in a legal gray area, excluded from official 007 box sets and retrospectives. The legal saga finally ended in 1997 when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), the distributor of the official Eon franchise, acquired the rights to the film from Warner Bros., effectively bringing Connery's rogue Bond film back into the corporate fold.
In the end, the title is both a promise and a warning. For James Bond fans, it is a reminder that even the most official institutions can be challenged by a good story, a legal loophole, and the enduring power of Sean Connery’s smirk.
Released in Never Say Never Again is a unique entry in the James Bond legacy as unofficial remake Thunderball . It marked the final return of Sean Connery
In 1983, James Bond fans witnessed an unprecedented cinematic showdown. It was the year of "The Battle of the Bonds." In one corner stood Octopussy , the official fourteenth entry in the Eon Productions franchise, starring Roger Moore. In the other corner stood Never Say Never Again , a rogue, non-Eon Bond film that marked the miraculous return of the original cinematic 007, Sean Connery.
Never Say Never Again opened on October 7, 1983, to mixed reviews but strong box office, grossing $160 million worldwide (equivalent to over $450 million today). Octopussy , released in June 1983, earned $187 million. In the Battle of the Bonds, Roger Moore won by a narrow margin, but Connery proved the demand for a mature, alternative 007 was very real.
To understand why Never Say Never Again exists, one must look back to the early 1960s. Before EON Productions brought James Bond to the silver screen with Dr. No (1962), author Ian Fleming collaborated with producer Kevin McClory and screenwriter Jack Whittingham on a script for a potential Bond movie. When that project fell through, Fleming adapted the ideas into his 1961 novel, Thunderball , without properly crediting his collaborators.
The film opens not with Bond shooting at the screen, but with a generic montage of 007 logos and a title song sung by Lani Hall.
Back in London, M’s office was a crucible of options. They could trace the module, lock the activation keys in a vault, and try to pinpoint Nevermore’s network. Or they could use the module as bait, broadcast a false activation, and lure Blackbird into a place where geography favored them.
What emerges is not a Bond film designed by committee at Pinewood Studios, but a pet project born of ego, money, and creative rebellion. Director Irvin Kershner, hot off The Empire Strikes Back , was brought in to lend gravitas. He succeeded beyond expectation, delivering a Bond film that feels less like a fantasy and more like a midlife crisis in a luxury resort.
