This usually happens when the keyboard layout configuration of your computer does not match the language setting of the scanner. Locate the "Language Configuration" codes in your physical manual to switch the scanner to US English, UK English, German, French, or Spanish layout matching your OS.

Ensure you are scanning a 1D linear barcode (like a UPC or EAN code). The YHD-5100 is a laser scanner and cannot read 2D barcodes like QR codes, nor can it read barcodes off smartphone screens or monitors.
