As Bakker explained, “I discovered that it is not the hole, but what is behind the hole that is important”. The holes in his objects do not just remove material; they invite you to see the space behind it, the wall, the floor, or the body of the wearer, as an integral part of the design. In his famous "Chair with Holes," the perforations reduce the chair's weight by a third without affecting its strength, transforming a simple maple chair into a striking study in form and function.

One of Bakker’s most conceptually brilliant works is the "Real?" series. To create these one-of-a-kind brooches and a ring, Bakker would start with cheap, worthless costume jewelry made of artificial stones. He would then commission a master goldsmith to create a miniature, meticulous replica of that piece in gold, silver, and real precious stones. The final hybrid piece combines the "fake" original with the "real" replica, forcing the viewer to confront their own biases about value. What makes an object truly valuable: its materials, its craftsmanship, or the concept that created it? The series existed as a collection of 10 unique pieces, each with "an astonishing intervention," making them some of the most prized items in his oeuvre.
