deCHK is a freeware utility developed by Sascha Presnac to address a very specific and common problem in Windows: the recovery of .CHK files. These files are created by the Windows Check Disk tool (CHKDSK) and its predecessor, SCANDISK, when they encounter and attempt to repair file system corruption. Instead of deleting the damaged data, these system tools convert the lost or corrupt file fragments into a .CHK format and store them in a hidden folder named FOUND.000 (or FOUND.001 , etc.).
Click the button. deCHK will begin scanning each .CHK file in the specified directory, attempting to identify the original file type based on the file’s signature. A progress bar will indicate how many files have been processed. Depending on the number and size of the .CHK files, the process may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Important Operational Constraints If deCHK does not meet
If you know you only lost Word documents, try copying a .chk file out of the folder and manually renaming its extension to .docx to see if it opens.
: Before running any recovery tool, copy the entire FOUND.000 folder to a healthy, secondary drive to avoid further data loss on the original corrupted disk.
Are you trying to recover data from a or an internal hard drive ? Knowing the storage type can help determine the best recovery strategy.
