During my first "Confessions of a Sound Girl" install, the director asked for absolute ambient noise removal. We were shooting in a converted warehouse, and the hum of a distant refrigerator threatened to ruin a crucial monologue. I learned quickly that in this industry, there is no ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) budget for a reshoot weeks later. The sound you capture on the day is the sound you go to post-production with. For those who may not be familiar, Joybear Pictures is a production company known for its high-quality video content, ranging from music videos to short films and commercials. As a sound girl working with Joybear Pictures, my job is to install and operate the sound equipment necessary to capture high-quality audio on set. This involves a range of tasks, from setting up microphones and mixers to troubleshooting technical issues and collaborating with the director and other crew members.
During the lunch break, the gallery’s HVAC kicked on. A 60-cycle hum, deep as a ship’s engine. The camera team didn’t notice. The gaffer was asleep in a rental van. But I heard it.
