In 1846, Edersheim was ordained as a minister in the Free Church of Scotland. He first served as a missionary to the Jewish community in Jassy, Romania, before returning to Scotland to lead congregations in Aberdeen and later in Torquay. In his later years, he moved to Oxford, where he became a well-known and respected preacher and lecturer at the university. He was a staunch defender of traditional evangelical theology and opposed the rising tide of higher criticism that sought to deconstruct the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch. He died on March 16, 1889.
